How to Buy Over-The-Counter Reading Glasses

Reading glasses can cost you anywhere from $1 at a discount dollar store to hundreds of dollars if you want customized designer frames. Very inexpensive readers will not necessarily hurt your eyes, but they could be uncomfortable to wear for an extended period of time. The best option for many people is purchasing over-the-counter (OTC) reading glasses from a pharmacy, department store, or online. You do not need a prescription for these, and many of these glasses will cost you less than $20, but will give you great quality, as long as you choose the correct prescription.

Something to keep in mind when purchasing OTC glasses is that they have the same prescription power in each lens. For an individual whose eyes require the exact same prescription, this is no problem. However, most people’s eyes need different amounts of correction. If your eyes have two different prescriptions, OTC glasses will not hurt your eyesight, but they might be uncomfortable to wear, causing eye strain. The over or under correction of one eye will cause the eye fatigue and discomfort. If your eyes have two markedly different prescription needs, OTC glasses might not be for you; instead, you should purchase custom glasses from the optometrist.

If you think OTC reading glasses are for you, the following steps will help you choose the correct prescription for your eyesight. Of course, the most sure-fire way to determine your reader prescription is to get your optometrist’s opinion.

However, when it comes to shop for eyeglasses online, in my opinion, there are certain things one must consider before hitting the ‘Buy Now’ button at your favorite eyeglasses website page. Therefore, before you buy eyeglasses online, keep following guidelines in your mind and I am sure you’ll end up finding the most suitable eyeglasses for yourself:

Do some basic research, visit some of the stores online and then zero on the site which you think is suitable not only for the present but also the future needs. Remember that you have to Read the rest of this entry »

How Long Have Prescription Eyeglasses Been Around?

From documents that were retrieved in Rome in the 13th Century, we know that prescription eyeglasses were available at that time. They were referred to as “spectacles” rather than glasses. Although we do not know for certain when prescription eyeglasses were invented, we do have proof that they did exist during this time period. A portrait done by an artist named Tomas da Modeno portrays a gentleman wearing eyeglasses. Obviously what we do not know is if they are prescription eyeglasses. There are, however, other documents such as a manuscript written by a man that implies that if the he wasn’t wearing spectacles, he would not be able to read or write.

In the 15th century the printing press was invented which meant more reading material was readily available. Thus, the need for prescription glasses increased. The first reading glasses were held by one hand only during the times that they were needed for reading. It was later in the 17th century when people actually wore the glasses regularly, after an optometrist created them with both earpieces. In those times, a person who was having difficulty with their eyesight would just go in and try on several pairs of prescription eyeglasses until they found a fit for their needs. That changed when Dr. FC Donders wrote the first book on examining the eyes to get prescription eyeglasses.

Benjamin Franklin is credited for the invention of the bifocal lens. With a bifocal lens the bottom half is used for reading and Read the rest of this entry »
