Correcting any serious issues we may have with the way our body runs is not something to be taken lightly. Having vision correction surgery is no exception. Before deciding to take the steps toward a life free of contact lenses and prescription glasses, it’s a good idea to first take the time to discuss a number of things with your doctor.
First of all, there are many different types of vision correction surgery. Which one is the best for you? Depending on many factors — how bad your vision is, whether you have astigmatism or not, your current state of health, certain medications you may be on, etc. — some surgeries could be perfect for you, while others could be very ill-advised. So before getting gung-ho about anything in particular, discuss the options available to you with your doctor and make sure you are qualified for surgery in the first place, and if so, which ones.
Make sure you let your doctor know any medications you may be on, or any conditions you may have, especially if they affect hormone levels and your ability to heal at a normal rate. Changes in hormone levels can change the shape of your corneas, and if your healing rate is slowed, this can lead to complications after surgery. So if you have diabetes, glaucoma, any disease makes your immune system less functional, tell your doctor.
If you are pregnant, nursing, or thinking of becoming pregnant before your proposed treatment date, let the doctor know. Pregnancy affects hormone levels, meaning it is best to wait until after the pregnancy is over, when you are done nursing, or before you even become pregnant in a planned-pregnancy case.

If, after all of the testing and discussions are said and done, you decide to go ahead with the vision correction, talk to the doctor about what exactly is going to happen, especially if there is a part of you that is terrified at the prospect of surgery, despite wanting improved clarity. The doctor can then take you through the steps, let you know the risks and possibly complications, and what happens after the surgery is over and even beyond that.

It’s almost always wise to understand a procedure before going through with it, especially when it pertains to something so important in your life. Knowledge is never a bad thing, especially if it can help alleviate any fears you may have, and ultimately bring you closer to a life with more clarity.
